N046 Rigging and Fleeting Loads:
Lift Planner

The NPORS N046 Rigging and Fleeting Loads – Lift Planner course provides managers, supervisors, and appointed personnel with the competence to plan and oversee lifting operations. The training covers legislation, risk assessment, equipment selection, method statements, and team role allocation. Candidates will learn how to prepare lift plans, calculate weights and load angles, and ensure safe and compliant operations in line with British and international standards.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, candidates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate managerial understanding of industry hazards, roles, and responsibilities.

  • Interpret manufacturers’ handbooks and apply PUWER, LOLER, Working at Height, Manual Handling, and risk assessment principles.

  • Calculate load weights, centres of gravity, angles, and tensions in accordance with manufacturer guidance.

  • Prepare risk assessments for basic, intermediate, and complex rigging operations.

  • Check certification of lifting appliances and accessories; understand common tools, PPE, and industry terminology.

  • Select appropriate lifting equipment for each plan and produce material/tool lists.

  • Develop step-by-step method statements including pick-up, route, and laydown points.

  • Allocate team roles and responsibilities across riggers, supervisors, and operators.

  • Create sketches, scaled drawings, or annotated plans to communicate lift details effectively.

  • Oversee complex operations, ensuring compliance with the lift plan.

  • Liaise with management and workforce via meetings, toolbox talks (TBTs), and site visits.

  • Lead post-task debriefs and identify lessons learned.

Duration

  • Novice course: 2 days (maximum ratio 6:1:1, up to 6 tests)

  • Refresher course: Duration varies, max 6 candidates

  • Experienced worker refresher: 1-day assessment

  • Successful candidates receive an NPORS Operator Card (Traditional or CSCS-affiliated).

  • Traditional NPORS Card: valid for 3–5 years.

  • NPORS CSCS Card: valid for 2 years, renewable via NVQ achievement.

Other Information

Do I need previous rigging experience?
Yes, candidates are expected to have practical rigging knowledge. This course develops lift planning competence rather than basic rigging skills.

What happens if I fail?
If you fail the theory test, you may be able to re-sit it quickly. If you don’t pass the practical/assessment elements, a retest will be arranged at a later date.

What do I need to bring?
A valid form of photo ID (passport or driving licence). PPE suitable for site-based training (hard hat, boots, gloves, hi-viz) is required.

Is this a training course or just an assessment?
This is a full training and assessment course. It covers both classroom-based and practical planning elements, finishing with theory and practical tests.

How long does the card last?
Traditional NPORS cards are typically valid for 3–5 years. NPORS CSCS cards are valid for 2 years and can be renewed by completing the relevant NVQ.
