N405 Crane / Lift Supervisor

The NPORS N405 Crane / Lift Supervisor course is designed to provide candidates with the knowledge and skills required to plan, supervise, and oversee safe lifting operations. The training covers legislation, documentation, communication methods, hazard awareness, and the safe use of lifting equipment and accessories. Candidates will gain the competence to supervise lifting operations in line with PUWER, LOLER, and other industry regulations.

Course Objectives

By the end of training, candidates will be able to:

  • Understand the industry, associated hazards, and the responsibilities of a lift supervisor.

  • Locate and identify different types of lifting equipment and accessories; explain their construction, uses, applications, and functions.

  • Interpret and extract key information from technical documentation.

  • Demonstrate and explain a range of communication methods used during lifting operations.

  • Apply procedures for placing non-serviceable items out-of-service.

  • Explain the use and function of RCIs (Rated Capacity Indicators) and anti-collision systems.

  • Plan erection, levelling, and dismantling requirements for various lifting equipment and lifts.

  • Establish exclusion zones and outline actions for emergencies and overhead hazards.

  • Identify potential hazards and unsafe lifting practices.

  • Check security of loads and accessories; explain load balance and integrity.

  • Supervise the safe movement of loads across different locations using appropriate communication.

  • Apply environmental considerations when planning lifting operations.

  • Carry out all “out-of-service” and securing procedures.

Duration

  • Novice course: 3 days (max ratio 6:1:1, up to 6 novice tests)

  • Refresher course: Max 6 candidates

  • Experienced worker refresher: 1-day assessment

  • Successful candidates will receive an NPORS Operator Card (Traditional or CSCS-affiliated):

  • Traditional NPORS Card: valid for 3–5 years.

  • NPORS CSCS Card: valid for 2 years, renewable on completion of the relevant NVQ.

Other Information

Do I need previous experience?
Yes, candidates should have prior knowledge of lifting operations. This course builds supervisory competence, not basic lifting skills.

What happens if I fail?
Theory re-sits can usually be arranged quickly. Practical retests can be scheduled at a later date.

What do I need to bring?
A valid photo ID (passport or driving licence) plus PPE suitable for lifting operations (hard hat, boots, gloves, hi-viz).

Is this a training course or just an assessment?
This is a full training and assessment course. Both classroom-based theory and practical supervision exercises are included.

Can Bowtec deliver this course on our site?
Yes, on-site delivery can be arranged if you have the correct facilities and lifting equipment available.

How long does the NPORS card last?
Traditional NPORS cards are valid for 3–5 years. NPORS CSCS cards are valid for 2 years and renewed via NVQ routes.
